Crows mate for life and Nyx has lost his nestmate Sapph, to a tragic accident. Sard, a roe deer has lost her fawn. Nyx and Sard meet by chance and an unlikely friendship begins, though further meetings must happen in secret because crows do not mix with dreamers. Crows have appointed themselves top of the forest hierarchy: they can count, make tools, solve problems. While Crows want to dominate the forest, Deer cherish it as alive, unique and mysterious. Their world is rich with relationships; they seek what is true, not power.

The Crows blame humans for Sapph's death, and they plan revenge. Meanwhile, humans threaten even greater disaster. After a fatal attempt to beat back the threat, Crows finally accept they need the Deer.

Sard, the Roe, visits an ancient Oak tree, the weaver of dreams, and has a vision of deer and crows morphing into one. Could the two tribes mount a spectacle of a kind that's never been seen before, that could show humanity that's lost its way, the way home?

The Crow and the Deer is a magical allegory that celebrates the potential in our humanity.
