In 1950s London, young couple, Rosie and George are worried about the winter smog that has caused havoc with George's health. George ends up in hospital where he receives a letter from his Jewish grandmother's solicitor informing him of her death and that he is the sole beneficiary of her state.

Now rich and in search of a new life, George purchases a vineyard in Languedoc, in the South of France. But things turn sour when Rosie falls for the attractive and enigmatic owner, Klaus, a young German.
