It is early 1941, and the Yorkshire sea port of Kingston-Upon-Hull is being bombed nightly with hitherto unknown savagery, so that the professionals and volunteers of the Home Front are working at full stretch. One such volunteer is Auxiliary Ambulance Driver Norma Matthews, who is limping home from her shift, having sustained an injury, when Andrew Todd, whom she remembers vaguely from school, stops to give her a lift on his motorbike. She learns that he is on survivors' leave following the sinking of his ship. Norma surprises herself subsequently by confiding in Andrew about a far more serious problem than her injured foot, and is surprised again, this time by his unexpectedly gallant response. Their relationship develops, although not as quickly as Andrew would like; in fact, he wonders if it will ever become more than a light-hearted fling. Meanwhile, Norma has to resolve a matter of conscience....
