So what was it really like growing up in the 1960s and 70s? Howard describes his life growing up in a northern mill town caught in the shadow of WWII. But things were looking up! This was the start of the space age and the advent of the swinging 60s, of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Carnaby Street, Mary Quant, the Moon landing, and the "white heat of technology". It was a time of DIY and doing up houses with indoor toilets, and installing central heating. But it was also a time of industrial strife, high inflation, the Vietnam War, and the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
