The Betrayal of Joel is the all too familiar story of how an innocent boy is betrayed by present day society. When his father, whom he adored, is no longer in his life, he feels he must protect his mother. He becomes entangled in a world of drugs and crime, from which he feels helpless to escape.

The story illustrates how, so often, the very people who decry the drug culture and the destruction it causes to the young and vulnerable are often those individuals who perpetuate the problem through their own addictions. A cast of colourful characters are interwoven in Joel's story, in particular his art teacher who inspires him to believe in himself and pursue his dreams.
