The Benedictine monks of St Eustace’s Monastery in Somerset are used to a quiet life of contemplation and prayer, sustained by their work as bookbinders and beekeepers. So it is completely shocking when one of the monks is found savagely beaten to death in a woodland near Bristol. Nothing is known about Brother Dominic’s past before he entered the monastery. It is precisely the kind of case at which DS George Cross excels.

As soon as Cross arrives at the monastery, he tunes in to the enviable silence and the regular routine of the monks’ lives. If only he believed in God, it would be the perfect place to live.
