Newport Free Grammar School, now the Joyce Frankland Academy, in Essex, has an oak screen memorial wall at the head of which is inscribed the school motto: Suffer and Serve, followed by the words: TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF THE MEMBERS OF NEWPORT SCHOOL WHO DIED FOR ENGLAND. Then in alphabetical order are the names of the dead. This is the story of those men who fought and died in many of the different theatres of that terrible struggle: France, Flanders, Italy and at sea.
