This novel is a sequel to A Secret Existence. Ben Swan is a young British detective chief inspector with the Counter Terrorism Command in Ireland when he is recruited by the UK Security Service, also known as MI5. His police rank is suspended, and he operates as a full member of the Service. His police background is not disclosed to his new colleagues. In accordance with MI5 policy, all members operate with a cover identity. This sequel continues his story from the end of the first novel. In this book, the main character is involved in tracking down killers, assassins and spies in the UK and America, including FBI and MI5 joint operation to disrupt an assassination attempt on the Cunard liner, Queen Mary 2, as it crosses the Atlantic Ocean. With this dangerous work, he relies on the professionalism, loyalty and trust of his fellow officers. Yet, he knows nothing about their true identities, families or background. He continues to find the anonymity of his existence difficult to accept, which is at odds with the camaraderie he experienced from his police service. This becomes particularly relevant when he develops a close friendship with a fellow officer, but he doesn’t know her true identity, and she doesn’t know his.
