The Frivolous Crime Squad
Paul Philip Studer
It has always struck me as odd to have a police unit called The Serious Crime Squad. All crime is serious by definition. I know what they mean by 'Serious Crime: murder, rape, bank robbery, for example.
'Serious' is defined as:
Demanding or characterised by careful consideration or application.
Acting or speaking sincerely and in earnest, rather than in a joking or half-hearted manner.
You could apply that definition to investigating any crime. So, I have flipped it on its head - the opposite of serious is 'frivolous'. 'Frivolous' is defined as:
Not having any serious purpose or value.
I have invented crimes that the Serious Crime Squad would not touch:
Stealing collection money from a church.
Wheelie bin fire.
Theft of five pairs of very expensive knickers.
It follows therefore, that these crimes are frivolous; hence the name of the book!
