When Ivan Lipka, a trained soldier, wakes up to find his spaceship crashed and burning on Earth, he has no idea what happened or how he got there. However, when he is able to move, he finds that he is positioned close to a huge crater. Following the glow of a light within the crater, he finds a team of engineers and miners there, who welcome him somewhat reluctantly. They inform him that the site, an old copper mine, is now partially radioactive as someone dropped a nuclear bomb near it shortly before Ivan's arrival. Some of the engineers in the mine suspect Ivan of having been the one who dropped the nuclear bomb, but he has no knowledge of that.
There he also meets the professional and very attractive Olga Ivanova, who helps nurse him back to health and becomes inextricably entwined with his fate. But Ivan still doesn't know who he is nor how he got there.
When he feels better, Ivan goes exploring the underground cavern and comes upon a discovery he knows he cannot mention to anyone, nor does he have any idea how it got there. When a dying miner gives him a map and some hints about what went on, Ivan knows he must get to the bottom of it all.
This cracking adventure tale is mixed with a moral narrative of what happens when an idea becomes an obsession, and the notion of good gone bad irreversibly. The plot is carefully designed and woven to maximum effect that will keep the reader gripped until the end.
