Granny Jones is so old that all her friends have died, and her children and grandchildren live so far away that they are unable to visit very often. She is so small that people don’t notice her; she is even overlooked in groups of people having tea and biscuits. Tired of being ignored and feeling lonely she wonders what she can do to change her life. Sitting in the park, she falls asleep and wakes up with a brilliant idea. She will wear plant-pot hats with flowers sticking up out of them, and coats with colourful flowers painted on them. Soon, friendly people stop to chat and Granny Jones begins to feel happier. One windy day she gets blown into the library and sits with the children as they listen to a story. Another day she finds that her sunflower hat is too tall to go through the door of the cafe where she is meeting a new friend. When, again, she falls asleep in the park two children fill her boots with soil. That gives her the idea to plant geraniums in them and buy a pair of flowery boots to wear. A few people think she’s a show-off and a silly old woman but soon everyone looks forward to seeing her smiling face and bright clothes.
