Pen Melyn, the centre of four women’s lives, set on an isolated island about three miles to the mainland. An epicentre of history and culture and a settled way of life - at least until the war comes.

The 1939-45 war years over topples the whole pedestrian pattern - a volcano of activity results and at the helm of all these changes is Eleri. Through the Blitz, evacuations, war losses, G.I. brides, the Battle of Britain and personal deaths, her beauty, intelligence and imagination conquers all and will pave the way once the dust has settled for a new, hopefully brighter, future.
