Exodus: A New Interpretation of an Epic Event

M.L. Gelman

The book is primarily a good read, interesting and informative. A prerequisite for the intended reader would be some interest in the Hebrew Bible also known as the “Old Testament”, no commitment to any religion is necessary. The book attempts to link the sparse chronological clues in the Pentateuch and the biblical Book of Exodus to the established and much more reliable chronology of Ancient Egypt, particularly the 18th Dynasty.

A hypothetical interpretation of the Biblical narrative is offered, miracles are explained as natural phenomena. The religious reformation initiated by the 18th Dynasty Pharaoh Akhnaton is discussed and the possible role of Moses and Aaron engaging in subversive activity to promote Akhnaton"s reforms. In 1360 BCE, contemporary with the 18th Dynasty of Ancient Egypt, the Mediterranean island of Thera and its inhabitants were destroyed by the eruption of a massive undersea volcano. The natural events which followed contemporary with the volcanic explosion of Thera are suggested as the basis for the plagues which assisted the escape from Egypt by the Israelites launching the Exodus and ultimately the conquest and occupation of the “Promised Land”. Who was the Pharaoh of the Exodus? Do modern archeology and contemporary hieroglyphs support the hypotheses?

Hypothetical, informative and plausible, a “good read” is indeed promised!
