‘It turns out there are plenty of us: the unlucky ones. The women whose journey into motherhood, or whose yearning for more children, has yet to be fulfilled by the universe. I am certain that in so many parts of my story I really am not the only one to have gone through it, so it makes sense to write it all down. For all of us - and for any parents who might go through some of what we did in the future too. So here it is, our journey to a rainbow. A story of fertility, trying again and, above all, hope.’
After losing her son, Teddy, in 2016 at three days old, slowly accepting his loss and processing her grief, Elle Wright and her husband decided to try and become pregnant once more. Yet not even a year after the loss of Teddy, Elle was back in hospital to deliver her second baby at 15-weeks, something she never imagined she would have to go through again.
Astoundingly honest and always hopeful, A Bump in the Road captures Elle’s immense journey to motherhood, from secondary infertility, three rounds of IVF, multiple miscarriages - all taking their toll mentally, physically and emotionally over three and a half years of countless hospital visits, ovulation sticks and negative tests.
Elle ached to hold her own living baby and started to wonder whether that chance was slipping away from her as the months and years went by. Questions, tests, drugs, medical procedures, tears, loss, frustration and so many more tears, throughout it all she managed to believe that one day it would happen for her, somehow… A Bump in the Road captures her journey to a rainbow, reflecting the reality of becoming a parent for the 1 in 7 couples who have difficulty conceiving in the UK today.
