This is an important and detailed contemporary account by a German staff officer - who witnessed many of the events that he describes - based on primary material from official records of operations of the First Army in the 1870-71 Franco-Prussian War. General Manteuffel’s army, fighting over the same ground in the Somme and Picardy that would see bitter fighting in the Great War four decades later, engaged the French in such actions as Amiens, Buchy and Bapaume before besieging Peronne
