This Russian translation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Yury Nesterenko has been available on the Internet since the year 2000, but is published here for the first time as printed book, with the classic illustrations by John Tenniel. From the translator’s Foreword: …all Russian translations of ‘Alice’ which I encountered are rather far from the original. Boris Zakhoder was the most honest since he directly called his version ‘a paraphrase’. Other translators who did not make such a statement generally took undue freedoms with the Carroll’s text. I will not claim that their translations are no good. On the contrary, Zakhoder’s version, for example, is written in a more vivid style than the original–but there is one little problem: Lewis Carroll did not write it. So, my purpose was to make a translation as accurate as possible–certainly, as far as the language differences between English and Russian allow. Yury Nesterenko (b. 1972) lives in Florida, and writes poetry and science fiction.
