Si Alexis Piron fut longtemps connu uniquement comme l'auteur de la grande comedie La Metromanie, plus recemment la decouverte de quelques-unes de ses pieces foraines, surtout le monologue delirant qu'est Arlequin-Deucalion, revela un autre aspect de son talent comique. Mais il fut aussi l'auteur de trois tragedies, dont la deuxieme, Gustave-Wasa (1733), devint l'une des mieux connues de l'epoque. Ce volume presente cette tragedie avec les paratextes prepares par Piron pour sa reedition dans les OEuvres de 1758. Les incidents foisonnent dans cette aventure de cape et d'epee, qui se deroule sur le fond historique de la fin de l'Union de Kalmar, quand Gustav Vasa chassa de Stockholm Christian II, detenteur de la triple couronne du Danemark, de la Suede et de la Norvege, pour prendre sa place comme roi suedois.
