The Last Man follows the lives of Lionel Verney and his circle as they confront personal turmoil and societal collapse. Beginning with Lionel's transformation from an uncivilized outcast to a close confidant of the noble Adrian, the novel explores themes of love, power, and ambition amidst the decline of civilization. As the story progresses, a devastating plague spreads across Europe, causing social chaos, natural disasters, and the downfall of governments. Through three generations, the novel delves into human resilience, the struggle for survival, and the consequences of ambition, love, and loss.
The Last Man by Mary Shelley, is one of the earliest works of dystopian science fiction. Set in the late 21st century, it explores the near-extinction of humanity due to a global plague, offering a prophetic and haunting vision of societal collapse. Shelley's narrative includes references to contemporary political structures, drawing on her observations of the British government and incorporating elements of her personal life, with characters inspired by her late husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and their friend, Lord Byron. Initially dismissed by critics and largely forgotten, the novel resurfaced in the 1960s, gaining recognition for its rich symbolism, philosophical depth, and its early exploration of themes central to later dystopian literature.
This case laminate collector's edition includes a Victorian inspired dust-jacket.
