Before Her Soul Rests

The girls must know what they have done. The prospect of their faces distorted with panic, begging for mercy, fills her with a sensation so fierce that she no longer feels the cold.

It was supposed to be like any other night out for Deandra Sings and her fourteen-year-old daughter, Lola. They bought the concert tickets months in advance, planned their outfits early, and set aside all other obligations to make for a fun-filled Friday in downtown Toronto.

They didn’t know what was waiting for them.
