ABOUT THE BOOK AND AUTHOR
The Professor was the first novel written by Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855). It was rejected by many publishers but was later published, posthumously, in 1857 under her pen name Currer Bell.
The novel is written in a first person narrative and tells the story of a young man named William Crimsworth from his point of view. It covers his formative years, his appointment and career as a teacher at an all-girl’s school in Brussels and his personal relationships. The Professor is based on Bronte’s own experiences in school.
Charlotte Bronte had four published novels: Jane Eyre (1847), Shirley (1849), Villette (1853) and The Professor (1857). Charlotte Bronte and two of her sisters, Anne Bronte and Emily Bronte, jointly wrote a book of poems which was originally published in 1846 under their pen names Currer, Acton and Ellis Bell.
