Meet the ecosystem inside you ...
A timid Bifidobacterium named Biffy is forced to leave their family and become part of a new community, in the gut of a newborn human baby.
Follow Your Gut is a comic that ate a biology textbook. It's an epic adventure set over the first three years of a new life, exploring one of the most important relationships you will ever have - the one with your gut microbiome.
Created by artists, scientists, and educators, this story is for anyone who's curious about the human-microbe symbiosis, and what all those trillions of bacteria are doing down there in your intestines!
Inspired by the latest research, Follow Your Gut includes a fascinating and detailed appendix that explains the amazing science behind the story.

We are hearing more and more about our gut and the importance of what goes on in there, so a book that explains this ecosystem in a clever and entertaining way is very welcome. Follow Your Gut uses a graphic-novel format to take the reader on a sophisticated ‘Magic School Bus’ journey. The reader is pulled along into the microscopic depths of the body, meeting the various bacteria characters who lurk there. A well-designed appendix section at the end provides further details and clear answers to questions.
Created by visual artists, scientists and writers as a Scale Free Network project, Follow Your Gut is an excellent example of how a collaborative approach can result in something that is more accessible, memorable and enjoyable than a more traditional textbook.
It’s a great choice for young people who have an interest in biology, and I can see it being a useful tool in high school classrooms. We have reviewed this book in our YA space, yet it has been published as a general nonfiction title and would be at home in both our science and health sections too. For ages 14+
