When the Lights Went Out

The night was frosty dark but we were snug and cosy in the kitchen. Then SNAP! The lights went out.
In the dark of night, a neighbourhood becomes a new country to explore, and an ordinary winter evening turns into a family adventure.
A reassuring story about finding comfort in community from the award-winning creators of Ella and the Ocean.

In the olden days, when I was young, the power used to go out in Melbourne’s suburbs a few times a year. Occasionally annoying, but more often great fun, it was something different and exciting. Where are the candles? How long will it stay off for? Is it the whole street, or just one end? In this new picture book, the lights go out and it’s a little bit scary. But soon, all the neighbours gather, and the occasion becomes a celebration of the night. (Why my neighbours didn’t start a sing-along every time a blackout happened, I will never know. They really should have!)
With whimsical illustrations and simple text, When the Lights Went Out is a delightful trip down memory lane, and a reminder of how little things can be a big adventure when you’re a child. Make sure younger readers keep an eye out for the owls and the foxes, they really are adorable. For ages 2+.
