Book Review

We Are Australians
by Duncan Smith,Nicole Godwin

by Dani Solomon, Mar 2022

We Are Australians is a wondrous book about what it means to not just be Australian, but to be a part of a community. We are new and from all over the world, or we have been here for tens of thousands of years. And we have rights yes, but we have responsibilities too. We’re not just individuals, we’re a part of something bigger, something ancient. We have been absorbed in the 65-thousand-year-old story of this country, and it’s up to us to reach out to connect with the culture of the people whose land we live on, to listen to and learn from their stories.

We Are Australians is probably my favourite book of the year so far. The illustrations are a feast for the eyes and the book’s gentle message – of the importance of community and listening to those who have been silenced – is just perfect. For ages 3+.
