Book Review

This Book Thinks Ya Deadly!: A Celebration of Blak Excellence
by Corey Tutt, Molly Hunt (illus.)

by Mark Rubbo, May 2023

Corey Tutt is the founder of DeadlyScience, a not-for-profit organisation that provides STEM resources to regional and remote schools in Australia and facilitates mentoring of First Nations students by STEM professionals. In his bright, good-hearted new book (his 10th), he profiles 80 First Nations Australians working in the arts, education, sport, and science. Some of the subjects, like Ash Barty and Adam Goodes, are household names; some, like Professors Marcia Langton and Tom Calma, have come to prominence through their work on The Voice to Parliament; and others have been quietly achieving in their chosen fields.

Tutt’s punchy, optimistic style brings his subjects to life enthusiastically, and his admiration for their achievements shines through. It’s fascinating to read through these profiles and feel slightly in awe of this amazing group of people. Molly Hunt’s illustrations provide a lively, contemporary feel that makes the book even more appealing. It’s a great resource for young Australians from all backgrounds; it will inspire them and encourage them to look to their own strengths. For ages 8+.
