Although the small town of Tillers Gap may seem out of the way, it is one reward for those who venture off the beaten track along the western foothills of the Blue Mountains. A visit to this secluded gem is well worthwhile. The Beladgery River still runs clear and clean beside an area of abandoned mines and waterholes called Deep Pools. However, the water in these pools is very cold and swimming is not advised, even during the summer months. The town’s broad main street is flanked by several fine old buildings and this part of Tillers Gap has the feel of a bygone era. However, appearances can be deceptive. A coal mine has opened only a few kilometres from these quaint streets. Only time will tell if this small pocket of real Australia will become again the bustling centre it was in the heady days when gold prospectors came from far and wide. For the moment, come to Tillers Gap to find out for yourself how welcoming this town is and enjoy all it has to offer. ‘The country town setting of this verse novel comes to life with Collett’s narrative skills, and her characters shine with human frailty and resilience.’ - Judy Johnson
