Fresh off their victory over Tenebrae, the Khaleeshir-with their dragons-must depart Xiar for the neighbouring Kingdom of Estion, to further their training under the watchful eye of the Aurichalcum the Brass and the Dragon Master Anducaerleonis. While in Estion they will find that things are not as peaceful as they would seem; political intrigue and power struggles abound in both Estion and amongst Darond leadership, and the Khaleeshir soon find themselves caught in the middle of it all.

Meanwhile, Drakhart is tasked by Tenebrae to find a way to remove Estion as a threat in the coming Enayran war, in carefully planned bid to limit Altimara's war fronts. With help from the Qiri'aran Blood Witch Elandyr'ni and several unexpected allies, Drakhart seeks to manipulate the turmoil within Estion's government in Altimara's favour by exploiting the division between the oligarchy of greedy barons and their king.
