Frank has a low-level administrative job in an import-export company based in Toronto. Unexpectedly, the company promotes him to be their agent in Europe. His job involves clearing shipping containers through customs in Amsterdam. The containers are filled with merchandise for sale in Europe and Frank becomes, without knowing, part of an illegal trading scheme. Living in Amsterdam thrills Frank and he enjoys his new job, his apartment in downtown Amsterdam, and the increase in his salary. This allows him to visit concerts, explore museums, and travel Europe. Frank becomes suspicious about his work, but two violent company enforcers discourage him from asking questions. Over time, Frank discovers enough about the nature of the merchandise that he realizes he has become a criminal. For a while, Frank continues his job. He is reluctant to give up his dream job and return to Toronto. However, after some time, he wants to break with his criminal activities and designs a plot to stop the illegal trade. In doing so, Frank must avoid the attention of the company enforcers. This involves many twists and turns that keep the readers guessing.
