Two births. One marriage. A suspicious death. A series of events that will shape a family's future. Middlesex, June 1841.

Edward and Elizabeth Broughton's latest grandchild is born in the workhouse at Isleworth. Meanwhile, Margaretta Greening, wife of wealthy gunpowder mill owner Matthew, gives birth to a daughter in the comfort of their own home.

The future prospects for the two children could hardly be more different.

Despite living in the same small village, the Broughtons and the Greenings have nothing to do with one another.

Until, that is, young Philadelphia Greening discovers Joss Broughton and his friend Jonty Tickle in their secret hideout - a chance encounter that will change the lives of all three.

A new series, set mainly in Victorian England, following the fortunes and misfortunes, the loves and losses, of the Broughton family, their friends and neighbours. This opener, spanning the years 1841 to 1867, principally features the adventures of Joss and George Broughton and their friend Jonty Tickle - the Three Jays of the title.
