Hassan was born in 1965, during the Civil Rights movements and the riots in Detroit. Hassan is the eldest of six siblings and 3 half-brothers who all lived under the same roof. His parents separated which caused him to grieve for a long time. Running away from home, he got a taste of what he thought was freedom. Going in and out of foster homes, group homes and detention centers, he learned how to take care of himself. Having so much resentment towards life he turned to drugs, which caused his life to come close to death. He met someone who helped motivate him in releasing all the pain he had inside for so many years. That release has started his healing process.

These poems are about addition, lifestyle, incarceration, obstacles, and childhood.
