Saving Maria

In 2000 in South Florida, Maria Alvarez gets a call from her mother begging her to return to Bogota, Colombia to reconcile with her father who is dying from chronic kidney disease. Two years earlier, Maria was kidnapped by the Colombian rebel group known by the acronym FARC who demanded ransom for her. After her rescue, she learned that her father told the rebel demanding a ransom that Maria is not his responsibility because she is married. Even though this was his way of dealing with the rebel, the crass statement wounded Maria and her family. She agonizes over her father's dying wish knowing that if she returned to Colombia she would forfeit her precious green card and risk being recaptured and killed. Leaving her husband and two young daughters behind, Maria finds a way to return incognito, only to find herself back in harm's way and fighting for her life.
