In the middle of the Great Green Forest, high in the Big Oak tree, grows a very large branch. Just above this branch, on the main trunk, a gnarly knothole juts out. Behind the knothole sits an itty-bitty door with a rounded top. Shiny brass hinges hold the door in place, and a pecan nut serves as the doorknob. Behind this itty-bitty door lives a little squirrel named Lily. She is a very interesting squirrel because, of all the animals of the forest, Lily is the only one with white fur. Her fur gleams in the sunlight, and her blue eyes twinkle when mischief is afoot. When Lily laughs, her long whiskers shake as if caught in a breeze. Lily romps in the Great Green Forest with all her friends, including Einstein the Wise Old Owl, Mozart the Little Pink Dragon, Elvis the Toucan Bird, Robert the Moose, Freddie the Indian, and many more, as well as visitors who come to the forest. Lily and her friends have many adventures, and right now, I’m willing to bet, they are out in the Great Green Forest smack in the middle of one of them. So how about if we go and see what Lily is up to today.
KEVIN PROCHASKA grew up in a small Iowa town, the tenth of thirteen children. He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology and from Western Michigan University with a Master of Science degree in Geology.
