After pursuing a pair of outlaws into the Piney Woods of East Texas, bounty hunters Charlie Brittle and Owen Ashe hit a run of bad luck. First the rains come, then Charlie falls ill. Worse still, they discover someone has already killed the men they were after. Things are looking bleak until they meet Hiram, a traveling snake-oil salesman, and his ward, a young woman named October.
