AI vs. SI, and the Spirit: Contrasting man’s nature with that of a computer.

Artificial computer intelligence is and has been an important topic of study and hope for the future. But can computer intelligence ever be expected to duplicate the broad and rich capabilities of humans? Ray Kurzweil, a computer scientist at Google, predicts that a singularity is approaching and will occur sometime in the next 50 years. This will be the point at which computers will become equal to humans in the ability to think. This paper questions the possibility, in principle, of this singularity. Humans have a dimension that we call spiritual. Our thesis is that this dimension is forever beyond the reach of computing machines.
