I was inspired to write the Poems at a time in my life when I needed to express them as therapy. My inspiration for Maybe God was Hurricane Katrina I was watching the news with tears in my eyes which prompted me to write this poem (I’ve won Two poetry contests on WHUR Radio Station in Washington, D.C.). My inspiration for Lost Man (I also won a poetry contest on WHUR with this poem) is what I seen my mother experience as a single parent of four children that she was raising in Reed Village Project in Springfield, Massachusetts. The Absence of the King was written by my daughter Malaysia Wood from the experience she had with her absent father. I Thought You Were the One I could Trust is based off my personal experiences with failed relationships prior to learning to love myself. Friend or Foe was written because I thought I had a very good friendship in which my trust was violated after she made it very clear that we were never friends. Change is Strange addresses the ups and downs of relationships from my perspective. All are written purely from heart. I had a coworker named Anthony Rowell that I would read my poems to (on our lunch break) and he inspired me to get them copy written and stated they would make great songs which is why the book is Titled Melissa Prophet’s Poetry/Songs. I pray they inspire an artist to sing them and the readers to relate and feel the emotions I felt when I wrote them.
