The World’s Greatest Football Team
Rob K Sawyer, Jim Moloney
Undefeated, and at first, unheard of. The National Guard football team of the Second Texas Infantry that came together in the months before World War I was composed largely of players from the University of Texas, Texas A&M, and a few from Baylor, Rice, and Southwestern. In their single playing season, they outscored their opponents by a margin of 432 to 6. They chafed over the one touchdown scored against them for as long as they lived. The legacy of the Second Texas Infantry team, however, is as much about the athletes who put Texas football on the national map as it is about their stunning performance. Before the Second Infantry, most believed that serious football was only played in the North and the East. The Second Texas Infantry was the team that changed that. The Second Texas was called The World's Greatest Football Team by opponents and experts alike.
