THE LAND BEYAWNED is children’s fantasy that teaches proper etiquette concerning yawning. The story showcases the contagious nature of yawning, and that it affects anyone who sees or hears someone else in the throes of a yawn. Highlighted, is this overwhelming urge that everyone must obey, even kings. The young hero of the tale, proves that persistence will eventually lead to success. The story begins as a strange visitor arrives in the land of he Yawnees. This uninvited intruder has never been seen because it’s invisible. But the fruits of its work are visible and audible. The Yawn is hopping mouth to mouth, victimizing everyone. The Yawn slips into your mouth even with your mouth closed and teeth clenched. And you are forced to open your mouth wide and suck in air. Upon exhale, the Yawn pops back out and jumps into the next nearest mouth. No one has immunity against the Yawn. From the woolkeeps in the fields to the Chi-Chi bees high in the balooma trees, no one is spared. Even King Cho-Cho is forced to succumb every time the Yawn makes its way back to the castle. King Cho-Cho calls for a hero to arise. Young Jabot answers the King’s call, and rides out on his gesak to find and capture the Yawn. After several failed attempts, Jabot devises a different plan. Jabot waited on top of Sandrock Hill, sitting on his gesak. Though invisible, the Yawn’s direction of travel could be determined by observing the visible and audible yawning of its string of victims.
It’s left the town and coming here, someone shouts. Jabot waited for the Yawn to enter him, and then he thrust his head into a box, yawned and exhaled. No one could see or hear Jabot yawn, so the Yawn has been stopped, captured in a box! With great fanfare, Jabot’s box is set afloat on a small boat and sent far out to sea. But, everyone begins to wonder what would become of the Yawn, if someday the boat sinks into the water, submerging the box? And will the Yawn make another appearance on land?
