The Kentucky 3rd Battalion Mounted Rifles [also called the 1st or 10th Battalion] was organized during the late summer of 1862 and officially accepted into Confederate service on November 7, 1862. Apparently some of the men of Company E were from Virginia, and it is likely that others of this battalion were also from the western portion of Virginia which became West Virginia. Col. Clay and some of the men of this battalion had served earlier in the KY 1st Infantry Battalion Mounted Rifles which was disbanded after its term of service ended. The unit served in the Department of East Tennessee, and later in the Department of Western Virginia and East Tennessee. It skirmished in various conflicts in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia, then surrendered at Bowling Green, Kentucky, in April, 1865.
