Based on Captain Charles Johnson's "A History of the Pyrates," the title tale offers a pirate account of a Port Royale that does not fall into the sea until well after the actual earthquake that destroyed the historical Port Royal. Other stories include a ghost who first appeared in a work of fiction, but haunts -- and works in -- a 21st century used book shop, a very Victorian Christmas ghost story, a venture through a mirror into a properly irrational Elvish land, and a few short pieces. The stories, ghosts and all, tend to be fantasy blended with historical fiction. If my ghosts keep you awake at night, it will be to chat about the world rather than to inflict terror.
