Beulah figures her life is set. At age 26 she is an old maid living with her parents helping to raise her younger siblings. Due to "hard times" her father decides she can better help her family by earning money for the family. He finds her a job, drops her off and tells her he'll be back for her money on payday. A whole new world opens for Beulah with friends, spending money and bobbed hair. She meets a man with beautiful blue eyes; a man who will change her life forever. This is a work of historical fiction based on the lives of Beulah and King Ray, two real people living in rural Alabama during the 1920s and 30s. Many of the events actually happened and are recorded in family histories and have been told and retold over generations. Some events, places and characters have been added from the author's imagination. The dialogue is fictionalized but is meant to capture the speaking styles and attitudes of the main characters.
