St. Francis de Sales (1567 - 1622) was a Bishop of Geneva, Switzerland, known for his deep faith and his soft approach in dealing with the religious divisions caused by the Protestant Reformation in the early 16th-century. He is particularly famous for his writings on the spiritual life. Among his many works, perhaps the most famous is, "The Introduction to the Devout Life." This classic text offers counsels and consoling thoughts, giving a window into the Catholic spirituality of the early 17th-century. These consoling thoughts are drawn from his entire corpus of writings, and is the work of Fr. Pere Huguet (1812-1884). This text was published under the title: "The consoling thoughts of St. Francis de Sales: gathered from his writings, and arranged in order, Dublin: M.H. Gill and Son 1892." To this text have been added illustrations both of the saint and of the Biblical figures that he refers to.
