Revised December 2024. Gunns are the original, non-related inhabitants of northern, mainland Scotland. They do not have an Orkney Islands origin. Clan Gunn should be viewed as a non-traditional Clan as it did not have a founding ancestor. Clan Gunn and Clan Gunn Chiefs were legally established in 1803. The first Gunn known to history was Coroner Gunn of Caithness who died around 1450. His eldest son started the MacHamish Gunns of Killernan line / Clan Gunn Chief line - many descendants from that line exist all around the world. In other words, the Clan Gunn Chief line is not extinct as some believe and which led to the invention of a Clan Gunn Chief in 2015 based on the flawed assumption that the old Chief line had died out. This book has much on the Chiefs and their genealogy but it also tells the tale of lives at various times. This book is based on many decades of research - for a more detailed version of Gunn history see my 'The Gunns: History, Myths and Genealogy'.
