There are currently 77 species of bats, at this writing, that are Critically Endangered, with some bats being hunted as "bush meat." In addition, some bat species have already been declared extinct according to Merlin Tuttle's Bat Conservatory team. COVID-19, also known as coronavirus, has brought about more bats being harassed at a greater rate because of misinformation over this pandemic disease. Bats are still misunderstood, and many people retain beliefs, sometimes called "old wives' tales", that are not true concerning bats. This is a thematic unit with intention to bring a clearer understanding of bats, our only flying mammal, and their importance to the earth's environment as well as to achieve valuable safety and social lessons.
