To make the painting in reverse: begin with the complete image and slowly subtract from it. When there is enough room, begin to alternate the contents with whatever is around you. When the painting is full again, subtract more from it. Grab more stuff. How does it work when you put new things in there? Keep changing the parts until it functions according to its own logic.
