Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge is located on the south shore of Long Island. The refuge, bisected by the Carmans River, covers more than 2,500 acres. The refuge protects the river’s estuary and hosts a variety of habitats including oak-pine woodlands, grasslands, and fresh, brackish and salt water wetlands. The refuge is accessible by more than six miles of relatively flat trails and is a joy to explore in any season.
