What we have here is a journal designed to document in photographs a few critical areas of Far Rockaway prior to several major building projects currently being financed through private speculators under New York City management’s guidance and supervision in yet another attempt at gentrification. Only modestly differing in general appearance throughout the past seventy years despite a failed full-scale revitalization program in 1977, the small commercial district will now experience a somewhat delayed introduction into the 21st Century. A new and ultra-modern library facility as well as a centrally-located high-rise apartment complex – both now underway – will ultimately alter the landscape of this southern section of the Borough of Queens. This booklet of over 200 color photos taken during three separate visits in October of 2007 and 2008, before the drastic rezoning/restructuring, will serve as a permanent record of the Village of Far Rockaway as fondly remembered by the two authors.
