Bertha Garlan is a novel by the Austrian writer Arthur Schnitzler, which appeared in 1900 and 1901 in the literary magazine New German Rundschau in Berlin. Later on, it was published as a book by the publisher S. Fischer. The protagonist Bertha Garlan, a widow living in a small town, meets again in Vienna her childhood sweetheart, the celebrated violin virtuoso Emil Lindbach. For a brief moment, she hopes to escape the provincial narrowness of her existence.
