Spiritual growth does not always happen when one expects it, especially when it stems from deep seeded generational physical and emotional abuse leading to the insidiousness of domestic violence which had become a way of life for many. It is challenging yet fulfilling, when things begin to seemingly unravel when in reality, however in reality, it is in the confusion that growth is evidenced in the midst of what feels and looks likes nothing but chaos, resentment, bitterness and abandonment. When these pieces mysteriously fall into place giving the seeker strength, confidence and a greater appreciation for life and family.
The main character in this ethnography is Charley Mae Wells Strong and she is the third of seven siblings. Everyone called her Charlie Mae. Family dynamics presented during her childhood taught her many things some good while others like being able to control her emotions. Very early on Charlie learned to build walls of protection that few could penetrate. Her intelligence, wit and self-determination coupled with an uncanny ability to see facts beyond truth and keep them separate is what propelled her throughout her career. Add to that her ability to hold secrets made her an exemplary employee, a loyal friend but an insufferable sibling.
