-Author Sales History: The first Split Worlds book, Between Two Thorns, has reordered multiple times since its first printing and has over 3200 copies shipped with 1143 sold on Bookscan. It is a sign of success that we were able to draw new readers to the beginning of the series. The other titles have between 1500 and 1800 copies shipped.
-Author’s Other Writing Success: Newman published an extremely highly praised SF novel with Roc Books in late 2015 called Planetfall, which has sold over 3600 copies on Bookscan. She has a second novel in that series, After Atlas, coming in November 2016.
-Popular Genre: Urban fantasy has been a successful market since the late 1990s when Laurell Hamilton began writing her Anita Blake and Merry Gentry series, followed by Kim Harrison, Richelle Mead, and Yasmine Galenorn, among many others. Steampunk and Alt-Victorian books became popular in the mid 2000s with the publication of Gail Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate series. Emma Newman marries the two styles and freshens the concepts by setting her story partly in our contemporary England and also an Alt-Victorian world.
-Author is an extremely proactive self-marketer. She is active online and on social media (including Twitter, FB, and her personal blog) and has a long-running podcast, Tea and Jeopardy, which has been nominated for a Hugo Award two years in a row. In 2015, her podcast averaged up to 10,000 downloads per month.
