Having introduced the family in Divided Families, this novel takes us into the lives of the next generation. Jim is the eldest son of William who we followed through his life as a Barnardo Boy who was sent to Canada only to return to England to fight in World War One. Jim, like his father, becomes a merchant seaman whose exploits take him to all parts of the globe but especially Australia and Argentina. A failed first marriage and a difficult second marriage are seen as a result of spending so much time at sea. Eventually settling ashore, he raises a second family of four children. Set in the twentieth century the novel includes seminal moments of that era, and shares the everyday hardships and triumphs that Jim and his family experienced throughout this remarkable period of history.
