An American Dream for an Indian Immigrant: Fantasies of a Life Without Discrimination

Dr. Amarjit Singh was born in Kashmir, a place renowned for its beauty including a multicultural balance until The Indian Partition forces his family to flee their beautiful orchards and homes. Generations of peace becomes a race for life, fearful of the people they shared community with because of religious differences. A bloody trail of fear and murder was hardest on Amarjit’s brother Billa Veer Ji, a child born with the most severe form of Spina Bifida, myelomeningocele. Through the strenuous journey on horse drawn tangas, Billa Veer Ji watches over and protects his younger brother. Amarjit and his brother share a bond that encourages medical school despite the norms and expectations of inherited wealth and limited education. After fighting his father, Amarjit is granted his parent’s support and returns to Kashmir, embraced once again in multiculturalism.
Dr. Singh immigrates to America on a whim and builds a life with the goal of improving the vulturous medical system in India and one day returning to his family. The story follows Dr. Singh through a crushing realization after increased religious war in Kashmir and against Sikhism. Pushed again from destiny, he stumbles into the development of a charity hospital with a partnership that turns sour after the death of his partner, Kirtilal Mehta, a famous diamond merchant and philanthropist. After returning to America, Dr. Singh finds himself in a hospital transformation in New York that equates to years of court battles and suffering at the hands of the Berger Commission.
